Bali – First Stop – Part 3 – Temples, Temples, and More Temples
Bali is really a land of 1000’s of Hindu (Balinese (Pura) , Javanese (Candi) , and Indian) temples. There are at least 3 temples in every town/city. There are private temples in houses. There are temples guarding the island. That doesn’t include the Mosques or the Buddhist temples. The travel sites are not consistent on the differences btw the Balinese and Javanese temples. I started to separate them, but then gave up.
Overview:

Pura Taman Ayun: Royal temple w/ water gardens. I thought this was interesting because of the moat around the temple. This temple was listed in 80 Gardens around the world)

- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_the_World_in_80_Gardens – I thought this is interesting for my horticulture friends. Travel around the world to look at gardens!
- Random light post – I find random light posts in the strangest places in Bali – it is not a series of lamp posts, it is just one – it reminds of the C.S Lewis Books.
- This is the largest bug I have found – Cicada – Not that I am looking for them, but I just expected to see larger bugs.
- Gates near the gardens
Pura Tanah Lot: I already posted the most taken and published picture in Bali – Part 1
- http://candi.perpusnas.go.id/temples/deskripsi-bali-pura_tanah_lot_54
- Animals displayed at Tanah Lot – bats, owls, and the famous Luwak (coffee bean eating cat). Side note – most expensive coffees in the world – I did try it – it is earthy, mellow/smoky, and a little bit of a bitter after taste (I just made all that up) – in theory it is supposed to roasted for 1 hour by hand after it has been processed from the animal, cleaned, roasted, and then used for people consumption. I need Sharron to tell me what type of bat and owls these are.
- More statues – The statues are interesting because most of them do not look like they are made from stone. It is like craved concrete using black sand. I will have to look it up later – you can see large circular saws while driving by the workshops.

Ulun Danu Berant Temple: On Beratan Lake. Locals come here to get away from the heat because it is higher in elevation.

- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pura_Ulun_Danu_Bratan – Wikipedia doesn’t have much info on Bali, if I have time, I would like to edit and link the multiple info about each site. There is a lot of cross references to religion, architecture, mythology, art, etc.
- Beautiful views
- Mosque overlooking the same lake
- .
Pura Gunung Kawi: I think all of the locals knows this as the temple w/ the 300 steps. The driver said it had 300 steps and when other locals asked me where I went I told them the place w/ 300 steps and they knew exactly where it was.

- Holy water spring:
- Lunch was at the top cafe – overlooking the rice fields – Lucky I didn’t pay for a rice field tour:
Yeh Pulu: I like stone carvings – like spelunking but in day light and without crawling on wet cave floor or accidentally bumping your helmet on a rock – ok – maybe it is nothing like spelunking. But really cool!

- Rice Fields:
- Irrigation – has to be one of the technology advances of man kind – find them everywhere in the world – this dog has a good life – best views in the world.
