Bali – First Stop – Part 2 – Green school, gardens, and woodwork

Green School:  Jessica, I didn’t make it to the John Hardy jewelry shop, however, I did make it to his Green School.   Mirielle was at green school camp all week.  Beautiful.  The architecture is perfect, the bridge over the river is gorgeous – check out his Ted talk below.   I found Allen’s retirement yurt.  I will take the main building overlooking the river as my retirement building (AC would be good).  Reminder:  Don’t be late picking up Mirielle from summer camp – it  is not fun being scolded by a 9 year old.  It is like being scolded by a 70 year old, my mother.   It is funny, because of the irony of being scolded by someone so young and so old, but sad at the same time because they really are hurt because they think you forgot them.  Both of them have the “guilt trip” down.

I think this is the school cow and the free range chickens – they living in the parking lot.  The chickens are giving the cow a kiss or eating the bugs off his nose.

Allen’s retirement yurt – fairly spacious.  The school uses it for overnight camps.  My retirement is the house above!

Prapen Jewelry:  Fun to see how they make the jewelry.  I was very surprised to see that all of the jewelers were women that day.  See Meg’s post.  Most of the shops that I have seen are mostly men – according to this web site – 61% are men vs 39% women.  Interesting.  I didn’t take any pictures – but this web site has the best overview w/  pictures.   They have a lava collection, very modern, simple, and nice.  Hawaii should do the same, but they would have to get around the myth of “Pele’s curse”.  Tourist can buy volcanic planters from Hawaii, I don’t think any of those bring bad luck or are sent back.  Maybe if you buy it, it is ok.

Locavoce Restaurant:  See Meg’s post.  Yum!  The restaurant has prix fixe Herbavore and Locavore menu.  We decided to try both, so we got one of each and tried to share.  The most cleaver names were:  Into the Rainforest – woodear mushrooms, fermented black garlic, A Leaf Fell Off the Tree – 15 different types of edible plants, and Into the Sawah – this dish included everything that you can find in a rice field.  Everything else as self explanatory – Squid, Crayfish, Duck, Watermelon, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, etc.

Botanical Gardens:  Beautiful location, basically an area for families to have a picnic, a ropes course for kids, places to rent, and a great view of the lake.  They 3 gardens – Cactus garden, Orchid garden, and a bamboo garden.  They are still expanding.

Mas:  Known for their wood work.  2 Different types of woods that I haven’t seen carved yet –  hibiscus  (very nice green and white wood) and crocodile wood (the trunk looks like crocodile).
