Bali – Farewell!!

Farewell Bali!! I will miss you!!  A couple of observations!!

  • Wow – there are a ton of things to do!  There is no way to see everything.
  • Bali reminds me of Hawaii – maybe it is the hot, humid, island life.  The culture is different and the people are friendly!
  • I learned a couple of phases.  Not very good for being in the country for several weeks, but thank you seems to be the an important word in any language.
    • Indonesian
      • Teri/ma Ka/sih – Thank you!!
      • Sa/ma Sa/ma – Your welcome
      • Se/la/mat Pa/gi – Good morning
      • Se/la/mat So/re – Good afternoon
      • Se/la/mat Ma/lam – Good evening
    • Balinese – I didn’t memorize these – I kept a cheat sheet!
      • Suk/sm/a – Thank you!
      • Ra/ha/jeng Se/meng – Good morning
      • Om/swa/sti/as/tu – Hello/greeting
  • Monkeys are smart.  They only come out when it is b-fast time and know who to steal food from (9 year olds)
  • Green school is amazing.  Alternative education.  Never really thought about it before!
  • People drive on the left side of the road.
  • Palm sugar is yummy!
  • Books seem to be more expensive in most parts of the world.  They seem to be the cheapest in America.
  • Music lessons can be fun, not just instructional.
  • Every culture seems to have their version of BBQ (Satay), fried dessert (Pisang Goreng), and leftover mixture (Nasi goreng)
  • Search engines/plane ticket prices seem to quote me higher prices than Kris or Meg for the same flight.
  • I learned a lot more about Bali (locations, textiles, wood work, architecture, art, etc.) after visiting the sites and then trying to update the blog afterwards.
  • It is easy to carry 1 Million Indonesian Rupiah in your pocket if you are an America w/ at least $100 to your name.   However, all of the bills come in hundred thousands – I don’t know why I had a hard time counting, there are too many zero’s – commas are important (in plng apps and currency).  Currency exchange is ~13,000 rupiah to 1 US dollar – you never get the x-change rate based on the currency converter (13,500 to 1 dollar).  3% fee on credit cards doesn’t seem like such a bad deal.
  • Isa is right, they charge more to exchange smaller denominations.
  • There are a lot of temples here!!
  • Cinnamon tastes different and stronger here.  According to wiki this is the same type of cinnamon that is exported to the US.   Meg thinks that the taste is the difference btw bark vs powder.
  • I have to change plans (not that I made many plans) Southeast Asia countries during the winter.   I should see China, Japan, and Korea, before winter time – otherwise I have to buy warm clothes!
  • Poor Dribbles!

Random pictures that do not fit anywhere:

  • Radler  – in Bali they have a grapefruit or lime beer mixture.

  • Not sure why I find signs interesting – we don’t see tsunami signs in CA

  • This sign must be for pedestrians.  The sign is facing the wrong way – so car drivers should not be able to see it.  There are rarely stop signs, lights or merge signs.  So it seem funny that they would put up a random street sign.  Most of the roads are not flat or straight and have sharp turns.  People drive on the left side of the road.

  • I thought the presentation for tasting and selling coffee and teas were really good.  They should do this in the US for the micro beers and wines.  No one remembers what you told them after you ordered your drink.  I guess it helps if they are trying to sell you the most expensive coffee in the world.

  • Retirement Idea – This lot is in a prime location.  Small lot compared to the other resorts.  But who needs to build a resort.
